Pupils carry axes to keep wolves away

Children in a remote Russian village are being forced to carry axes to school for fear of being attacked by wolves or other wild beasts.

Pupils from Verkhny Nugush in the Bashkortostan region trek six miles through a snowbound forest to attend classes in a neighbouring settlement.

Parents decided to arm the children, who are aged between 12 and 14, after they had to flee from a wolf that emerged from the woods.
