Groups disagree over California wolf management plan

After more than three years of meetings, reviews and rewrites, California wildlife officials this week released a draft plan on how to fit gray wolves back into the country’s most populous state…While Wilbur [director of government relations with the CA Cattlemen’s Assn] said the plan doesn’t do enough t protect livestock, Amaroq Weiss…said the draft plan leaves the door open to killing wolves to protect livestock…”People tend to think we need to just kill wolves and we won’t have a problem,” Weiss said. But she said killing wolves would just allow other wolves to move into the territory”…state officials think most wolves will likely want to live in eastern Siskiyou and Shasta counties, as well as Modoc and Lassen counties. Those areas are more suited to elk, which is the wolves’ favorite prey, the management plan says.
