Bears under threat: Fears over forest giants becoming hunting trophies

As many as 140 brown bears and 97 wolves may become hunting trophies after they were stripped of legal protection, warn wildlife campaigners. Less than a year after Romania was praised by conservationists for banning the hunting of the iconic creatures along with lynx and wildcats comes plans to eradicate “nuisance” animals…Brown bears are being blamed for putting seven people in hospital and attacking dozens of sheep and cattle in remote parts of the country this year. The huge predators have also taken to coming into built up areas to feast on rubbish. Yet the decision to put the bears in the crosshairs of hunters has angered conservation groups who fear wolves will also be targeted in coming weeks.
