89 bears killed to boost moose hunting in Western Alaska

…The goal of the program was to reduce the number of bears in the area as low as possible…The nearly 8,000 pounds of meat from the bears, valued at approximately $80,000, was distributed to villagers…A wolf control program has been in effect in a larger portion of unite 19A since 2004 but has not had a measureable effect on the moose population, Harms said.  Approximately 150 wolves have been killed in the area in the past 10 years…
